favorite movies of the old year
every year I make a ranked list on letterboxd of all my first-time watches in that year, and edit the list as the year goes on. i like it because not all 4 star movies have the same goodness. there is nuance that can't fully be expressed by letterboxd's ratings. and first and foremost letterboxd is strictly for data collection!
i present my top 4 movies from my rankings
4. The Warriors dir. Walter Hall (1979)
i watched this movie at the very end of the year but it made it to my favorites. i love the costumes and campiness of the gangs. I enjoyed the ancient subways cars and the familiar subway stations. i feel this movie has insane rewatchability. it would never get old to me. the scene where swan and mercy are walking through the subway tunnel is something i dreamed up looking at the animation on the walls riding the Q train (real Qheads know what i'm talking about)
I wish i had watched this earlier. I wish to watch more 70s movies about new york but not the ones about italians.
3. Problemista dir. Julio Torres (2023)
this movie is so overlooked and underlooked but should be properlylooked because it is very relevant right now. julio torres explains the paradox of immigration to america in a magical colorful way. he and his cast are so funny and i love all of alejandro's toy inventions. i love the sets and the props and the eggs. what comes to mind when i think of this movie is this scene where alejandro is realizing the endless loop of paperwork one must complete to live in america. a screencap is pictured below.
julio torres i love your mind and I should've told you that both times i saw you on the street in williamsburg but i was hesitant.
2. 12 Angry Men dir. Sidney Lumet (1957)
I too am an angry man because i don't like admitting that film bro movies are actually good. but this one was really good. i often resist watching movies that film bros like because they usually are movies about men for men. this movie literally has 12 men. but I liked this one a lot. I realized i really like movies that were originally plays because they still kind of feel like plays on video. now this isn't one of those movies but it still feels like a play. something about the ensemble cast and the singular set and the dialogue. honestly i'm overdue a rewatch because this was at the beginning of 2025 but it still remained a top dog in my head throughout the year.
I don't enjoy plays as plays though
1. Do The Right Thing dir. Spike Lee (1989)
Who's gonna argue with me? again with movies that feel like plays... this is one of them. i'm incredibly late to the game on Spike Lee but i'm hoping to catch up. i think i watched this movie because it was mentioned in one of my dreams and i woke up like Damn i'm never even seen it before. i think it was a premonition from god because this movie is just.. yeah just watch it
and rewatch it in the summer
